I found some lovely images today from a book called Old and New Japan from 1907. The artist's name is clearly shown in the front of the book as Montagu Smyth (no 'e' in Montagu) but I can't find anything about him on the web. I did find a Walter Montague Smyth (with the e) who died in 1965 which would make his work still in copyright but I really don't know if it's the same man.
